President Biden’s controversial document discovery. Kevin McCarthy’s first week as speaker.
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Thursday he appointed a special counsel to investigate President Biden’s handling of classified documents from his time as vice president. It came after the White House disclosed that documents were found in Biden's former office in Washington and private residence in Delaware.
Republicans were quick to pounce on the news, and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Congress will investigate.
It’s one of the many items on House Republicans’ to-do list, after passing a rules package on Monday and pursuing issues the party mostly agrees about like forming a panel focused on investigating the government.
Although House Republicans appeared mostly united on policy this week, underlying tensions and divides within the caucus were exposed. On Wednesday, two measures to restrict abortion were approved by a majority of the House, but Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) voiced the unease felt by some in the GOP in restricting abortion when polling and November’s election results show the issue is unpopular with voters. And GOP lawmakers are also split over how to deal with freshman Congressman George Santos (R-NY), after a growing number of members of his own party have joined Democrats in calling for him to resign for lying about his background and resume.
