I'm Robert Costa and this week I'm watching the ticking clock. Can the Senate pass the Republican health care plan before the July 4th recess?
Late last week, several conservative Republicans announced their concerns with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's proposal. So did a couple moderates. Can Republicans find enough common ground to get the 50 votes they need?
The Congressional Budget Office will also release the results of their weekend number crunching. And we'll find out if this bill has the "heart" President Trump thought the House plan was lacking.
The Republicans have promised for years to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. This may be their last best hope to do that.
It all comes on the fifth anniversary of the Supreme Court decision uholding Obamacare's insurance mandate. That's one of the most unpopular parts of the original law and it's one thing the Senate plan eliminates entirely.
As the clock counts down to Friday when Congress leaves town, you can bet there will be a lot more back room negotiating among Republicans trying to get to yes. And a lot more on-camera complaining from Democrats trying to run out the clock.
