Watch: The legacy of Lowndes County and its impact on America

Dec. 02, 2022 AT noon EST

In the 1960s, Lowndes County, Alabama was 80% Black, but the white elites fought to prevent the Black residents from voting. Inspired by the reporting from the Atlantic's Vann Newkirk, a new documentary -- "Lowndes County and The Road to Black Power" -- looks at how Black residents in the county fought to secure the right to vote.

On Washington Week Recommends, Yamiche Alcindor speaks to Newkirk about the film and how the legacy of "Bloody Lowndes" explains a lot about race and voting rights in America today.

Washington Week Recommends is a weekly live series hosted by Yamiche Alcindor that highlights compelling reporting across the country. Tune in every Friday at 12:30 p.m. ET/EDT on this YouTube channel.
