Yes, I am Dr. Sigmund Freud. I suppose I am a devoted Freudian like no other.
In 1895, my partner, Josef Breuer, and I announced a new technique to the world. This technique, called free association, is a way to cure hysterics from their mental afflictions. Patients are encouraged to express any random thoughts that enter their minds. By doing so, previously unconcious thoughts and memories are brought to the conscious, thus allowing the patient to understand unconscious motives. This will hopefully free the patient from the problem. Free association led to a therapy known as psychoanalysis.
Two years later, in 1897, I began my work on dreams. I discovered that the mind's energy needed an outlet when not fully discharged, and that this outlet came in the form of dreams. I also learned that dreams are disguised fulfillments of a person's wishes.
The interpretation of dreams is another tool psychoanalysts use to make the unconscious conscious, a vital step in achieving mental health.
