- Hello, nice to meet you.
- Okay.
(upbeat orchestral music) - Little Women is not only one of the most famous books in the world, it's one of the most loved books in the world.
- I'm Josephine, but everybody calls me Jo.
- There's something very fresh about it.
The adaptation goes to the emotional core of what it would have been like to be their age then and not now.
- The corsets and the mannerisms, that was a big window for me into the past.
- I loved the corset until I hated it.
- Yeah, it's, you know the first time you try it on you just think oh, this is great.
And then oh.
- There's a courage and a boldness about the March girls that does feel very modern.
- I need to not live out my entire life in the tiny town where I was born.
I needed to see things and be things.
- There were very few careers that were available to women.
And I think it's rather marvelous that Marmee believed her daughters could be independent.
- Men were afforded so many more opportunities than women were.
And Jo wants more from life.
- Jo takes off on her own course, but she wasn't content to simply get married and have a family.
The fact that she was a writer and was published was noteworthy.
- Theaters are ordered four stories and as much verse as I care to write.
He said that he liked it because it was more, more than honest.
- It's beautiful, Jo.
- I think our adaptation of Little Women is really good at making all of the characters so deep and so complex.
- I will marry whom I please, Aunt March, you can leave your money to anyone you like.
- There is a defective carrot that one encounters in the young, but they are engulfed by (mumbles).
- I think it's really powerful and shows how ahead of her times, Louisa May Alcott was.
- You didn't even cry when father left for Washington.
- Sometimes we simply have to do the bravest thing.
- This novel has delivered something powerful to young women and young families and to some young men as well over and over again now for 150-years and that's the power of Alcott's writing.
