Kate Phillips, before we jump into Season 3, there’s a mystery in the Season 2 finale we need your help solving: Can you tell me, if you know, what Eliza was going to tell Duke at the end of episode?
Kate Phillips: I don’t know if this is right for me to say, because I always leave this left down to Rachael [New], but in my head it was like, “You’re leaving…” Would she go so far as to say that she loves him? I don’t know. But certainly, the intention to express some form of deep, deep affection/love was there. And I don’t know if she’d ever really have ever got it out, to be honest. She would’ve started and then tried to rewind, or bring it back, or whatever. But yeah, I love that scene. It was really fun, because she switches immediately when she realizes that he’s not going.
What can you tell us about Season 3 of Miss Scarlet and The Duke?
Kate Phillips: Well, in Season 3 you discover a lot more. You see a lot more of Eliza’s vulnerability. A couple of characters come on the scene that really test her emotional stability. And whilst you are so used to seeing this really strong woman who’s not prepared to look at her emotions…there’s some stuff [with William] where you see her a lot more vulnerable. There’s some really great development in her relationship with Nash, which comes to a head in one particularly exciting episode in Season 3, Episode 3. But I think what the fans will enjoy most of all is really observing the strength of Eliza and Duke’s relationship through everything that goes on over the course of Season 3. There’s a lot of obstacles that come their way.
Rachael New, what can you tell us about Season 3 of Miss Scarlet and The Duke?
Rachael New: We learn a little bit more about Eliza’s past—somebody comes back from her past that causes her to be a bit unsettled. We have the lovely little Ivy and Potts relationship—we explore that a bit more, which is such huge fun to write for. Cathy Belton [Ivy] and Simon Ludders [Potts] have got such brilliant comic timing, and we’ll see that a lot. We learn more about Moses. We dive a little deeper into our core characters, and we definitely get to explore Nash more as well, which I find very interesting. We peel those layers.
There’s maybe a little bit more comedy, maybe a little bit more energy and pace to Season 3. So I would say it’s more of the same, but we are delving a bit deeper into our characters and understanding them on a slightly different, deeper level.
What can you share about the cases we’ll see?
Rachael New: [We] try to really stay true to the period, but they’re also relatable. So we’ve got an episode about the theater, Victorian theater, which was huge fun. We’ve got an episode about the Irish. This was a time when there was a bombing campaign in London, so there’s a bit of a political kind of flavor there, which was really fascinating. We have a fantastic London gangster episode and then [one that’s] almost a bottle episode, which all happens in this French hotel in the countryside overnight—also huge fun.
We’ve got a lovely one all about fine cuisine, as well, and some beautiful, beautiful sets…We definitely dive into more quite technicolor worlds. Everything looks beautiful and fun.
