Where We Left Off in Van der Valk Season 1

Marc Warren in Van der Valk Episode 2

During Season 1, we met a lead character carrying a not-so-hidden emotional burden. With the season finale, we learned his painful backstory through flashbacks: In a high-speed car chase pursuing a corrupt cop, Van der Valk’s car was rammed and flipped. Inside, his boss Chief Julia Dahlman was badly injured while Piet’s wife Arlette was thrown from the vehicle and perished. He’ll never get over her.

What to Expect in Van der Valk Season 2

Actor Marc Warren as Piet Van der Valk on MASTERPIECE on PBS

Season 2 rewards audiences with a fast-paced police procedural that explores Amsterdam’s cultural contrasts, from artists living as squatters to obsessed serial killers, and from the vibrant world of classical music to the dark heart of sex trafficking. Filmed on location, the series showcases all the sights, sounds, canals and coffee houses of this great city.

And rest assured; we still have a bad-tempered lead detective who dresses like a skateboarder but thinks like a forensic psychologist. In his private life, Piet Van der Valk remains a commitment-phobe, but appears to be working on his social skills. At work—dare we say it—he may even be mentoring the rookie teammate who saved his life in Season 1.

The Characters & Cast of Season 2

No one could play the unapologetic Van der Valk quite like Marc Warren (Beecham House, The Good Wife). The character’s still “quite closed, a bit impenetrable,” Warren tells MASTERPIECE. That said, “his opening scene sees him suddenly getting a bit of love. He’s getting hit on by a couple of women, and then gets rescued by another!” (Hmmm.)

Van der Valk’s team operates like a slightly dysfunctional family—a disparate gang who bring different strengths to working together. Inspector Lucienne Hassell (Maimie McCoy who plays Dorothy on All Creatures Great and Small) is Piet’s quick-witted right hand. Sergeant Brad de Vries and Lieutenant Job Cloovers are the juniors on the team, played by actors Luke Allen-Gale (who’s appeared in Endeavour and Wallander) and Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Ready Player One), respectively. Hendrik Davie (Darrell d’Silva from Wrath of Man) is the pathologist who keeps beer in the morgue. They’re all overseen by the gentle Chief Julia Dahlman (Emma Fielding from Les Misérables, Unforgotten).
