A fresh reimagining of the iconic series Monarch of the Glen has just wrapped filming for MASTERPIECE on PBS and we can’t wait for all the warmth and whimsy. The new series comes from the same production company behind the charming 2001 original and once again captures the unique magic of the Scottish Highlands. This time, the story follows an accomplished female lawyer who begrudgingly returns to her quirky family's ancestral estate. Read on for everything we know so far about the reboot's storyline, its cast (including a few MASTERPIECE MVPs), where filming was done, and what makes this return to the wild Highlands highly anticipated.
What is the New Monarch of the Glen About?
The new series offers a fresh “monarch” facing thoroughly modern challenges. Career-driven solicitor Isla Campbell leaves London to attend her estranged father’s funeral in the Scottish Highlands. But what begins as a brief visit quickly takes an unexpected turn when she discovers her family is burdened with a million-pound debt—and her quixotic brother refuses to sell the ancestral estate to pay it off. Forced back under the same roof, can the siblings save their Highland home, or will old tensions prove impossible to overcome?
Who’s Cast in the New Monarch of the Glen?
Viewers can look forward to three MASTERPIECE veterans in the new cast: Julia Brown (World on Fire) portrays protagonist Isla Campbell, Phyllis Logan (Guilt, Downton Abbey) is her Aunt Morag, and Rishi Nair (Grantchester) is businessman Daniel. Further casting includes Chris Fulton (Bridgerton, Outlander) as Isla’s brother Alasdair, Ewan Miller (The Gray House, Crime) as gamekeeper and family friend Ewan, and John Gordon Sinclair (Gregory’s Girl, Death in Paradise) as longtime family lawyer Fergus.
