So we're facing these problems of climate change and
greenhouse gas emissions and oil security and sustainable
energy for growing transportation systems around the world.
What are we going to do about it? Some of the things we know
will work because they've worked in the past. For example,
fuel economy standards; we know those work. And we know that
we have the technology to increase fuel economy by 50% over
the next 10 or 12 years, and maybe with technological
advances, 100% over a 20-year period. But we may have to give
up increasing the horsepower and increasing—continuing
to increase the horsepower, continuing to increase the size of
the vehicle. So the price of dealing with climate change,
dealing with our oil security problem, may be giving up the
horsepower race in vehicles and giving up the size race in
vehicles.
