It isn't that we lack the engineering skill and, oddly enough,
I think the industry has focused on ringing further
improvements out of the already fairly mature power train
rather than to go to the physics of the car. Now, maybe that's
because they just got in a rut. They're the best in the world
at steel stamping—they do this incredible difficult
thing very, very well. What they have has been called the
highest expression of the "Iron Age." It's an amazingly
sophisticated product, but its made of steel, steel is heavy,
it takes a lot of force to accelerate something heavy so you
need a really big engine to get decent acceleration out of a
two-ton car.
