Modern automobile is an amazing achievement; it's the highest expression of the "Iron Age." We make one of them every couple of seconds, its an amazing meld-manufacturing and marketing skill, it's a vehicle for emotions, not just for bodies, and it meets seemingly conflicting needs for economy and safety and performance and aesthetics and so on with remarkable skill. On the other hand, I think it's fundamentally obsolete in the way it's designed—its way too heavy, it uses way too much fuel and emanates way too much carbon.
