When looking at cellulose and corn, I have to acknowledge two
things. One: these raw materials lead to very different
consequences ultimately in terms of their potential for
large-scale benefit to society, as in my estimation. Number
two: the existing fuel industry is entirely corn, and people
who've invested in that industry—which is not only
Archer Daniels Midland but a lot of farmer-owned coops, for
example, and many other folks along the line—they're
interested in the future; they're intrigued by the possibility
of cellulosic biomass and fuels made there-from. They've also
got a present to be concerned about, and they don't want to
mortgage the real present for the imaginary future too soon.
