Let me start by putting this in very personal terms. I see the
transition to sustainable and secure energy sources as one of
the biggest challenges of our time, and basically decided to
devote my life to frankly trying to being of— to trying
to be of service in that domain. So my skills are those of a
biologist. Photosynthesis is actually where the vast majority
of energy in the biosphere comes from, makes the world go
round, a form of solar energy. And so the question is, "Well,
what do we need that's useful, that we can make out of
cellulosic biomass or out of photosynthesis and how do we make
it?"
