True
In the 1980s much effort went into creating aquariums that
reproduce the coelacanth's environment, including the same
cool, highly oxygenated water found at the depths of between
500 and 2,200 feet where coelacanths have been discovered. No
fish brought to the surface has survived for more than a day,
however, most likely because of the stress of rapid ascent,
rough handling by fishermen, and inhospitable conditions in
warm surface waters.
