As the men pulling on the ropes jerk the obelisk forward, the
pivoting log, a crucial part of Whitby's design, twists
dangerously. If the log jerks forward any more, the obelisk
will tumble over the edge of the ramp.
The rigging team pounds on the log to move it back from the
edge and into position. The men pull the obelisk forward
again, and again the log jerks forward perilously.
