The experiments Brown and his team have done with ropes and sand have paid off. As they remove the sand from the pit, the obelisk gradually descends toward the critical turning groove. Brown can't resist the temptation to get into the pit with the stone, fully confident he and his team are in control. The obelisk lands smack where it's supposed to: in the cradle of the turning groove.
