One of the most bizarre-looking UAVs ever made, the Lockheed Martin/Boeing DarkStar has been described as a clamshell with wings. DarkStar was one of three high-tech, stealth surveillance UAVs underway in the late-1990s as part of a U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) effort to produce new UAVs by 2015. DarkStar was expected to fly undetected at 45,000 feet in all weather conditions and transmit close-up images to soldiers on the ground, but the UAV was recently cancelled for financial reasons.
