The Pharos of Alexandria The Pharos of Alexandria

The Pharos of Alexandria is the youngest of the Seven Wonders. This lighthouse was erected off of Pharos Island during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (284-246 B.C.) It was called the Pharos, which, because of its fame, came to mean lighthouse all over the Greek world. Earthquakes decimated the structure, and in 1480 A.D. a fort was built where the Lighthouse once stood.
