Head trauma is a major cause of death and disability for people
under age 45. But are the procedures commonly used for dealing with
head trauma and coma patients the most effective that medicine has
to offer? Neurosurgeon Jam Ghajar believes some patients with brain
injuries die due to the use of "outdated and harmful treatment
methods." Dr. Ghajar recommends that there should be a standard for
treatment, in much the same way that there is a standard treatment
for heart attack patients. NOVA follows Dr. Ghajar on his quest to
standardize procedure in emergency rooms and intensive care units to
increase the odds that head trauma patients recover as fully as
possible.
