<div class="rich-text">Thirteen days after <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/houston-flood.html">Hurricane Harvey</a> hit southeast Texas, Ann O’Bannion returned home for the first time. During the storm, floodwaters had risen about six feet over her roof, leaving her home unrecognizable. Harvey dumped 27 trillion gallons of rain on Texas and Louisiana, and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/08/29/harvey-marks-the-most-extreme-rain-event-in-u-s-history/?utm_term=.95b226405e2c">broke every record for rainfall</a> from a single storm. It was the first category 4 hurricane to hit the U.S. since 2005.

 Ann O’Bannion:
 
 Oh, my God. I’m going to start crying. This is unreal.



 Onscreen:
 
 Thirteen days after Hurricane Harvey hit southeast Texas, Ann O’Bannion sees her home for the first time. Harvey was the first category 4 hurricane to hit the U.S. since 2005.



 CNN Reporter:
 
 It’s not a CAT 1 anymore, this is a category 4. 130-135 MPH storm.



 Onscreen:
 
 And the first Cat. 4 hurricane to strike southern Texas since 1970.



 O’Bannion:
 
 Nobody expected it. It’s- you know, we’ve had hurricanes before, but nothing to this magnitude.



 Onscreen:
 
 Harvey broke every U.S. record for rainfall from a single storm, dumping 27 trillion gallons of rain on Texas and Louisiana. Floodwaters reached as high as 20 feet.



 O’Bannion:
 
 They said it was six feet- six or nine feet over my roof.



 Ann’s Neighbor:
 
 We’ve never flooded on this street. No one had flood insurance because of that reason.



 O’Bannion:
 
 Oh, there’s some pictures. It’s terrible, baby. Oh, my God. It’s a mess.


 Oh, crud. It came off the hinge. Oh, my God.



 Onscreen:
 
 Before the storm, Ann had just made the last payment on her mortgage.



 O’Bannion:
 
 Good lord. Oh, my word.



 Onscreen:
 
 At the height of the flood, water filled Ann’s home from floor to ceiling. The force of the flooding water moved Ann’s furniture from room to room.



 O’Bannion:
 
 This bible is from when I was a little girl…my mother and daddy’s. My daddy passed away when I was 10. It’s one of the few things I have.


 Yeah, but I want that. That’s the kid’s wedding video.

 Harvey destroyed an estimated 40,000 homes



 O’Bannion:
 
 I worked so hard on this stupid house. How do you recover from this?



 Onscreen:
 
 Over the last 9 months, Ann has been rebuilding her home. She’s almost ready to move back in.
