Biography
Fredric Backlar is a trusted, knowledgeable and experienced specialist in the traditional arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
After taking a survey class as an undergraduate student at UCLA with the renowned African Art scholar, Professor Arnold Rubin, Fred switched his major to art history and focused his studies on the traditional arts of non-Western cultures. In 1989 Fred graduated from UCLA with a degree in art history and later joined Sotheby’s in Beverly Hills where he became the West Coast representative for Tribal Art, developing close relationships with renowned collectors in Southern California including Jay Last, Ed & Cheri Silver, Saul & Marsha Stanoff, The Stendhal Gallery and Leon & Fern Wallace.
In 2009, Fred was appointed international Director of the African, Oceanic & Pre-Columbian Art department at Bonhams. Over his 15-year tenure at Bonhams, Fred produced over 45 auctions and developed Bonhams into one of the world’s leading auction houses in the field of Tribal Art.
Dedicated to connoisseurship and scholarship, Fred’s mission is to partner with discerning collectors and institutions in acquiring artworks of the highest artistic merit, ranging from traditional African art, Oceanic art, Pre-Columbian art and Native American art. Fred also provides appraisal services, advice on purchasing artwork at auction, conservation and impartial advice on authenticity.
