Biography

Mark Schaffer, Ph.D., is a principal at A La Vieille Russie, a family business founded in Kiev in 1851. ALVR moved to Paris in 1920, and has been located in New York City since the 1930s. We specialize in fine European and American antique jewelry, Fabergé, gold snuffboxes and objets de vertu, and Russian decorative and fine arts. Since graduation from Harvard College and U.C. Berkeley, Dr. Schaffer has spent almost 35 years at ALVR. He serves on the boards of the National Antique and Art Dealers Association of America, and the American Society of Jewelry Historians. Dr. Schaffer has curated exhibitions at ALVR, and has lectured internationally.
