Observational activity
Observe in a preschool and make note of conversations between teachers and children when the adult was trying to be sensitive to the feelings of the child. In each conversation that you heard, how did the teacher respond to the child and what did she say to help the child put his feelings into words? Try to write down as much of each conversation as you can and describe the situation that led to the exchange. Underline the dialogue where the teacher was responding sensitively to the feelings of the child and describing his feelings to him.
Then choose one of the conversations when the adult's responses did not reflect the child's feeling or emotion. Substitute what you would say instead that would clearly let him know you have understood what he is feeling and that describes back to him what he is feeling. Underline the dialogue where you modified what the teacher said and described the child's feeling to him.
