The star of young bassist and vocalist Kate Davis is on the rise. In 2013, she got the unexpected chance to perform at the American Voices weekend festival and concert hosted by Renée Fleming. The Kennedy Center audience was expecting Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling, but since he was ill with laryngitis, Davis was asked to step in at the last minute. She wowed the crowd with her rendition of “I’m Gonna Lock My Heart,” a song Billie Holiday recorded in 1938.
Davis’ first great honor was being named a 2009 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. In 2014 MTV proclaimed her one of “15 Fresh Females Who Will Rule Pop.” Her recent performance of “All About That Bass” with Postmodern Jukebox has had over 9 million views on YouTube.
