A Signature Drum Sound

Sorry, this video is not currently available.

“You could always tell Dave Clark’s drumming by his signature snare drum sound,” says Max Weinberg, the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and the band leader of”The Max Weinberg 7″ on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. “The build on the tom and the snare drum was something that Dave would do, and that’s how I learned how to play the drums.”

After beginning with Tom Hanks’ induction speech for the Dave Clark Five at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, this film excerpt goes on to include interviews with E Street Band members who describe Dave Clark’s sound. On any concert night he plays with the E Street Band, Weinberg says he uses “a lot of Dave Clark rolls.” Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt talk about the Dave Clark Five arrangements that were built around Clark’s distinct drumming style. Van Zandt calls the band’s records “some of the most powerful records ever made.”
