Lincoln Myths and Misconceptions Quiz: Answer 2

Lincoln’s Hat. After the shooting, this hat was found in Abraham Lincoln’s box at Ford’s Theater, taken to police headquarters, and exhibited at the trial of the conspirators.

2. Where did Abraham Lincoln like to keep many of his papers and documents?
A. His boot
B. His coat pocket
C. His hat
D. His carpetbag

C. HIS HAT. According to Ward Hill Lamon (Lincoln’s friend, fellow circuit lawyer, and self-appointed bodyguard) Lincoln’s hat was the “usual receptacle of his private notes and memoranda.” He used his hat in a professional capacity as well – as postmaster of New Salem, Illinois, Lincoln would sometimes have to walk over a mile to deliver mail to families living on the outskirts of town – and would carry their mail in his hat.
