The Five Families

Bonanno Family
Boss: Joe “Big Joey” Massino, aka “The Last Don”

In July 2004, Massino was convicted of participating in eight murders. He was sentenced on June 23, 2005 to two life sentences. After his conviction and in return for not receiving the death penalty, Massino turned government informant. His taped conversations with acting Bonanno boss Vincent “Vinny Gorgeous” Basciano helped secure Basciano’s arrest on numerous charges, including a plot to assassinate a federal prosecutor.

Gambino Family
Boss: Nicholas “Little Nick” Corozzo

Corozzo is the only mob boss not currently in prison. He was released on June 10, 2004, after serving time since 1998 on a racketeering conviction. Upon release, Corozzo reportedly took over the reins of the Gambino family from official head, Peter Gotti, brother of longtime Gambino boss John Gotti.

Lucchese Family
Boss: Vittorio Amuso

In 1991, Amuso began serving a life sentence in prison, after being convicted of murder and racketeering charges. Amuso continues to run the family from jail.

Colombo Family
Boss: Carmine “Junior” Persico

Persico has been in prison since 1985. He is serving a 100-year sentence for murder and labor and construction racketeering convictions, but runs the Colombo family from his jail cell.
