TITLE: Rediscovering Dave Brubeck with Hedrick Smith AIRDATE/TIME: Sunday, December 16, 2001 at 10pm on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings) DESCRIPTION: For fifty years, Dave Brubeck has been a giant of American music, pioneering a new style of jazz, writing 500 tunes, playing to sell-out crowds and exciting millions of fans. Now, at his 81st birthday, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Hedrick Smith presents an intimate portrait of the world-renowned but still controversial jazz legend. Rediscovering Dave Brubeck takes viewers from Brubeck's boyhood on a California ranch to the peak of his popularity in the 50's and 60's, to the present, when Brubeck at 80 is still going strong, creating new music and touring the U.S. and Europe. At his home piano in Wilton, Conn., Brubeck shows Smith where he gets ideas for songs and how his signature tune "Take Five," among others, was composed. Former Brubeck sidemen Eugene Wright and Joe Morello take viewers inside Brubeck's famous quartet, and critics like Stanley Crouch, Ira Gitler, George Wein and Ted Gioia evaluate the innovative style that made Brubeck a paramount figure in the world of jazz.
