I have no faith that God exits and have no image of God. Sometimes , just before takeoff on a flight , I will nervously ask a blessing for myself. The face I sometimes see when I close my eyes in those moments is that of John Paul II .

while I don't believe in God myself, I do believe that religious belief is often a necessary and on balance, beneficial aspect of the human experience.

I've never had a "religious experience". If it should happen , as it has to some of my friends, I think it might change everything.

If you have children, did becoming a parent change your relationship to faith? If so, how?

My wife is a Catholic, and I was pleased to have my children raised as Catholics, with the thought that if they should one day need their faith , it would be there for them.

What should be the role of religion in politics?
your photo/ link/ video has been held for approval by a moderator
Religion is an inevitable part of the political process. Making laws is most often a codification of our moral impulses. For many people, their morality is an extension of religious beliefs. On the other hand , it is not enough to argue political issues only from one's religious beliefs, without also using broader democratic principles to make the argument.
Should courses about religion be taught in public schools? Why or why not?

If proper ground rules can be worked out, courses on world religions, the bible as literature, and inclusion of religious history in broader history courses could be very helpful.
Do you feel comfortable discussing your faith with others? Why/why not?

Not really, but when I ask people about their religious background and current beliefs, I always find it illuminating and the conversation deepens my understanding of them.

Are religious beliefs compromised by engaging in politics?

If the drive for power triumphs over the moral impulses which often compel an entry into politics, it can damage one's faith , I think.
