Imagining the Future Lindenthal's apprentice of many years, Othmar Ammann, a brilliant Swiss mathematician and engineer, conceived of another approach. Acting on his own, he looked further north to Fort Washington. The ground was high on both sides—a bridge could be built here without extremely long and expensive approaches. If it were built for autos and light commuter rail, it would be lighter and less expensive than Lindenthal's Goliath. Ammann won the support for his plan from New Jersey's new governor, George Silzer. |
