Going It Alone Lindenthal reacted with contempt to Ammann's idea, so the Swiss left his former mentor. In a new borrowed office, Ammann began to draw. He was committing his first major bridge design to paper which, if built, would be the longest suspension bridge in the world. Early in 1925, after interminable rounds of meetings and presentations, the legislatures of New Jersey and New York approved construction of a Fort Washington-to-Fort Lee suspension bridge.
