Into the River Walls Four great tunnels averaging four thousand feet in length had to be dug through the cliffs to divert the river around the site leaving the riverbed empty and dry so that construction crews could dig down to bedrock and then put up the dam and power plant. The diversion of the river through the canyon walls by itself can be considered one of history's great feats of engineering.
