Inhumane Heat More than 1,000 men toiled in round-the-clock shifts to dig out the four tunnels, where temperatures reached 140 degrees. Some five thousand men worked on the dam project, tolerating brutal conditions because the Great Depression offered them little choice. Some were experienced miners and construction men; many more were farmers, clerks, teachers and professionals (even a violinist) who had run out of options.
