These
openings get clogged with bits of food, detergent, and mineral
buildup from hard water. To clean them, gently probe the openings
with a toothpick or straightened paper clip.
Capping
Exposed Tines
Over
time the plastic coating on the racks' tines can wear off. Exposed
tines will rust and can damage the items you place in the dishwasher.
You can fix this by gluing on new rubber caps. Look for them
at appliance repair shops.
Removing
Stains
Fill
the detergent cup with a commercial dishwasher cleaner, powdered
orange-drink mix, or powdered citric acid, then run the empty
dishwasher through its full cycle. For spot cleaning of stubborn
stains, you can make a paste of the powder and apply it to the
stain. Let it sit a good hour before scrubbing it off.
Another
method for removing mineral stains is to fill a two-cup measure
with white vinegar and set it on the bottom rack. Run the otherwise
empty dishwasher through its full cycle.
Clean
the Door Gasket
OK,
a dirty gasket won't affect the performance of the dishwasher,
but it looks really gross. Household cleanser or a mild vinegar-water
mix is fine for this. To get in the crevices, try a cotton swab
or an old soft-bristled toothbrush.
