Cheikh, 26 years old (Goree
Island, Senegal)"I was born on September 29, 1972 at Nguekhokh.
I came to Goree at the age of four to live with my uncle when my parents died.
I did my primary studies here before going to Dakar for my secondary studies.
I was at Lamine Gueye high school before doing some vocational training. I
first join(ed) Carter training school where I had a degree as a programmer,
then I went to the High Institute of Computer Science to become a technician
in hardware and software maintenance. I am also the President of a basket-ball
association and I practice martial arts, Aikido to be precise." Cheikh is
currently working for the Goree Institute as a liaison officer.
Marie, 15 years old (Dakar, Senegal)"I am 15 and a half years old. I am in Fifth Form at Sainte Marie Privet School. I have been in Dakar for more than a year now. I was living in Brittany, France. I like life in Africa because there are many things to be done (certainly not as much as in the U.S.) and people here are very nice. School takes up he greatest part of my time and the rest I devote to seeing my friend and horse-riding."
Etienne, 22 years old (Goree Island, Senegal)"I was born on February 28, 1976 in Goree, where I spent most of my childhood. I love that island because it is a symbol for the entire humanity, people from different colors passed by there; some came there out of their own volition some others were drawn there by force. I did my primary studies at Leopold Angrand elementary school in Goree and my secondary studies at Saint Michel in Dakar. Now I am in Final Year in the " G " field (Accounting and Economics). I like computer science and I have learned it by myself, I am considering studying it seriously."
Albouri, 19
years old, Senegalese/American Heritage (Dakar, Senegal)-"I am 19,
and go to Yalla Suur En High School in Dakar. Ive lived in Senegal,
since I was 7 years old, and I go back to the USA every summer to visit my
parents and my little sister who is 17. I was born in Brooklyn, New York but
my parents live in Virginia. My father is Senegalese and my mother is American.
Her parents are from Bermuda and Barbados. At the beginning I came to Senegal
to get to know my relatives here, and my origins and also to learn how to
speak French and Wolof. But then after having acquired all the above, I decided
to stay until my senior year (which is this year) to pass an exam that will
enable me to be ahead of the other students in USA." Albouri is currently
attending Michigan State University where he is a sophomore.
