The race to Damascus was on. Allenby's army thundered up the Palestine coast, hitting the Turks hard.
The Arabs took heavy casualties but Lawrence was determined victory would be theirs.
At the Battle of Megiddo in the fall of 1918, the Turkish army in Syria was destroyed by Allenby's superior forces. The gates of Damascus lay open.
While Australian and British troops hovered on the outskirts of the city, awaiting fresh orders, Lawrence and the Arabs slipped in on the morning of October 1, 1918, and established their own administration.
Allenby finally arrived two days later.
