Kathleen Hall Jamieson last spoke with Bill Moyers about the impact the Internet is having on the campaign. She returns to the JOURNAL to take stock of the post-Iowa landscape.

Although campaign-watchers note that the winners in Iowa are by no means assured of the nomination — the media spotlight provides those in the forefront with a valuable opportunity. As Kathleen Hall Jamieson explains to Bill Moyers:

We forget sometimes that speech making is a very important role in the presidency. There are times in the nation in which the president is the only one who can speak to us and for us. And whether it's the president we wanted elected or not, that person has to be able to play that role for all of us.

After the Iowa vote this past week, the first votes of the 2008 election, both Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama were able, in their victory speeches, to "try on the presidency and see if it fits," as Ms. Hall Jamieson explains. Kathleen Hall Jamieson is the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication and Walter and Leonore Annenberg Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Jamieson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society. She is the author, co author or editor of fifteen books including: UNSPUN: FINDING FACTS IN A WORLD OF DISINFORMATION, THE 2000 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF PARTY POLITICS, THE PRESS EFFECT and EVERYTHING YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT POLITICS...AND WHY YOU'RE WRONG.
