On Oct. 1, 2000, the Japanese dolphin hunting
season began in the central Japan port of Taiji. Plans are for fishermen
to catch nearly 2,400 dolphins at Taiji, with a total of nearly 17,000
dolphins to be taken in several ports combined, before the end of April 2001.
