Premiere Date: June 23, 2009
Synopsis
Puerto Rican-American rapper Hamza Pérez pulled himself out of drug dealing and street life 12 years ago and became a Muslim. Now he's moved to Pittsburgh's tough North Side to start a new religious community, rebuild his shattered family and take his message of faith to other young people through hard-hitting hip-hop music. But when the FBI raids his mosque, Hamza must confront the realities of the post-9/11 world, and himself. New Muslim Cool takes viewers on Hamza's ride through streets, slums and jail cells — following his spiritual journey to some surprising places in an America that never stops changing. Produced in association with Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB) and the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM).

Clashing cultures
Great film! It exposed a controversial main character and an unlikely combination of cultures.

Mr
The filmmaker says "we need to find common ground"?!? What that Islam demands a world run under Sharia law and that advocates the killing of kufar ( non-believers)?? Again another liberal propaganda piece that cowtows to Islam by showing "peaceful" Muslims without actually showing us what Islam and Muhammad ACTUALLY TEACHES!!! They never tell us how Sura 9 esp. Sura 9:5 (The Verse of the Sword) one of the last sura's advocated unrestrained holy war against non-muslims or how Muhammad in his last speech before a group of Muslims and on his deathbed cursed Jews and Christians. The first Sura (Surat Al-Fātiĥah) that's repeated at least 17 times a day during a muslim's five scheduled daily prayers (salah) calls the Jews cursed (who have earned Allah's anger) and Christians to have gone astray (Sura 1:7). If you want the truth about Islam just go to jihadwatch.org

The promo and info for this film is just wonderful. I am really looking forward to June 23rd. Muslims are now are a significant minority in America and we are every day making quiet but possitve contributions to the American culture and lifestyle. Although this film focuses on one individual and what is particular to his life experiences it will hopefully help to shed light on some of the facets of American Muslim life that many of us share. All Muslims shold be family oriented, care about their neighbors, keep themselves away from drugs and alcohol, and make a possitive contribution in their communties. This is a message that needs to be shared. We all worship one God.

A Perspective Long Overdue
Islam is not a monolith. One fifth of the world's humans share this faith, but their choices in how to manifest their faith through the fabric of their lives is remarkably diverse.
I look forward to watching this film, to seeing how well it manages to portray one voice in a huge diversity of Islamic voices.

Great Film
This is a great film that shows the humanity and indigenous nature of Islam and Muslim-Americans. The director has shown great courage and brilliance in taking on a documentary about Islam from a normal, human perspective.
Justin, I do not know who has informed you, but I am sorry to say you are mistaken. There is no such title for the verse in Chapter 9 (Verse #5). As a well-informed Muslim (who continuously tries to learn and practice the religion as best as I can), I can tell you that Islam does not demand a world run under Shari'ah law - the proof is in the pudding. Islam spread to Egypt, Syria, and even India while the majority of people were allowed to maintain their own religions. These facts are well established history.
The verse you are referring to, which Muslims have not given any kind of name and do not recite more than any other of the 6,000+ verses of the Quran is as follows:
"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful."
Muslim scholarship has always agreed upon the fact that this verse relates to the specific time in which it was revealed. This was not one of the last verses revealed and does not call for an unrestrained war against non-Muslims (how many wars do you know in history where Muslims have killed non-Muslims? If it was a central part of the religion, wouldn't there be a lot more bloodshed known?) This verse is specifically about the pagan Arabs who were fighting against the Muslims. It is completely forbidden in Islam to randomly kill people, whether they are Muslims, Jews, Christians, or atheists. I wouldn't be part of a religion that was as such.
Also, the other two verses you are referring to in the Fatiha - there is no mention of Jews or Christians. The Prophet Muhammad said clearly on several occasions, "I was not sent as one who curses [others], rather I was sent as a mercy." This is the central theme in Islam. For any who would like to see what his life was about, here is a link to his biography:

Response to MR
I had an opportunity to read the response from MR. The response detailed misinformation, and references various chapters in the Holy Quran. Unfortunatley, these types of interpretations by those from any religion without knowing the totality create hostilitiesnot far from the fundamentalists that we have throughout the world. They preach but don't research the truth. In you want the actual translation and knowledge go to alislam.org. Sura Fatiah has no references as stated. This is what it says: In the name of Allah the Gracious the Merciful, All praise belongs to Allah, The Gracious The Merciful, Master of the day of Judgement, Thee alone do we worship and Thee alone do we implore for help, Guide us in the straight path,The path of those on whom thou has bestowed Thy favors,Those who have not incurred Thy displeasure and those who have not gone astray. I DON'T SEE THE REFERENCES OF JEWS OR CHRISTIANS??

Well said.
This is the type of dialogue we need. There are fanatics in every faith, but no one true path to enlightenment/paradise/heaven.
The fringe is what we need to enlighten.

Justin, have you actually read the sura you make reference too? what you claim to be in surat fatiah IS JUST NOT IN THERE. I am so sad that you have been so brainwashed, and I am even more sad that you don't have the curiosity or intelligence to check something out for your self rather than vomitting it up on the internet.

To Surrender
I thought this trailer was very interesting and I am looking forward to watching the documentary.
I am not a muslim. I'm simply just a friend. I am however, humbled by the meaning of Islam and the faith that surrounds its people. Although I do not ascribe to any religious affiliation or faith, I am forever intrigued at the force behind the faith.
To Surrender (Islam) is a volunteer action. Anyone can stand and fight, but few can leave it all behind and surrender. Surrendering implies letting yourself go, without expressed limitations or negotiations...to simply give of yourself all that you are and to place it all in someone else's fate. In Islam this is what I see: A complete and proactive action of faith to the the unknown...without any certainty of outcomes, just faith...without any reassurance of a prize, simply hope...without the allowable timing, simply bliss. To Surrender is what we all want, but we are so afraid.

Excellent Film
I was really impressed with this film! This film really does a great job of humanizing American Muslims instead of other media which just seeks to impose stereotypes and portray Muslims as "the other". As evident in a few of these comments Islamophobia is a ugly affliction based on ignorance and fear. This documentary helps to alleviate that fear and educate the ignorant on the truth of Islam.

Saw the film about two months ago...
...and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was refreshing to see the practice of Islam in the United States by everyday Americans humanized. As a non-Muslim American film maker, Maytorena-Taylor provides a fresh perspective that is more American than Muslim, and allows the viewer to see the individuals in the film as Americans who happen to be Muslim, as opposed to Muslims, first, second, and last. As a Muslim born and raised in the United States, I think it is of critical importance that people in the United States, Muslim and not, realize that our humanity binds us to one another, and our religions are means for individual fulfillment, not a means to separate us or create strife. This film shows a path where religious Muslims in the United States can and do contribute positively to their neighborhoods, their communities, and ultimately, to the United States.

I'm super excited that there finally is a film representing the WHOLE PERSON and not just ignorant beliefs. It puts humans into context. America as a whole is so ignorant. Sad
I find it hard to appreciate the point of view of this film: that there is something to celebrate in a young Puerto Rican man's acceptance and adoption of a lifestyle based upon iron age superstitions and "Jihad," because it has prevented him from what the film preassumes would be a life of drug addition and criminality.

Tolerance for the intolerant?
Friends,
1. The Civil Rights war ended 30 years ago. The minorities won. Its over.
2. Fundamentalist Muslims are not satisfied to simply practice their faith. Islam is also a political system of Sharia law they intend to impose on all of us. These guys are the Muslim equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan. Like the Klan, they recruit from those with backgrounds of poverty (for ideological motivation) and crime (for the brutality required to impose their will on others).
3. If the jihadis succeed, how much creative freedom do you suppose POV will enjoy? Don't kid yourself, you'll be the first to go. They're not exactly liberals, dude. New Muslim Cool: Glamourous. Trendy. How cool is your future?

change
I was very impressed by the way the film makers portrayed this story. even though some comments suggest that islam is violent and point out some verses here and there, they fail to get the complete picture. it was a job well done showing how Hamza had progressed from his rapping in harlem to a more realistic life in the suburb. Hamza deserves alot of credit for working towards a change that he truly believes in. I loved the part where he sits and reads the biography of the prophet may (peace and blessings be upon him) and tries to improve himself. may he and this program benefit many of us and inspire many more inshallah

WOW, ENLIGHTENING GREAT COVERAGE
Our police and FBI agents think that they have so much control that they have put fear into every low income home and non-christian comunities, "other cultures and communities across the United States. What happened to our constitutional rights? American or not...any person can be violated at any time by our American forces. I am personally discusted, the news talks about lower income people, "the statis quoe" I had to take critical thinking in college yet a person who works for our county that has WAY TO MUCH authority has never had to take the classes I did, for a higher paid job, with the authority to take children away from a parent. AMAZING. What I find truly fascinating about Hamza is how good he still was to his mother, grandmother, and the rest of his family AFTER he became Muslim. Instead of condemning them he was thanking his mother. He is juggling so many things on so many different levels and is still able to maintain perspective through adversity. He has become everyone's inspiration. May God help him always.

Romans 14:1-12
I am a born again Christian.
Therefore I can not see eye to eye with Hamza or I would be a hypocrite and a bad Christian. I do however commend his courage and the way he handled his situations. I identify with him going through my own “jihad”. I identified with him when he said he thought he would die at 21 and became a Muslim at 21. I always thought I would die at 45 and was baptized instead!
Funny you would think the two of us would have nothing in common, and then when you really listen, you see how much we, as humans, actually do have more in common with each other than we have differences!
I loved hearing an x-gang drug person say, "I want to go back to the prison!" Now that he is on the right side of the prison bars! God does work in mysterious, miraculous ways! Hamza has come so far and sounds like he is doing many things right and positive for himself, his family and his community. I live in Pittsburgh and I hope some day to meet him in person. I am very proud of him, (after the raid) the way he handled things! I know his mom is proud of him too, you can see it in her face. Maybe she doesn't understand all of what he is about, but she is proud, you can tell!
I am old school and do not like hip-hop music but I really liked the song snippets I heard! The words soundede great and even the beat was great. I am curious to hear more. I was very blessed to be flipping through the TV stations and happen upon this documentary. It made me think of so many things. Thank you Hamza for sharing your story and God bless you on your journey!
The film itself was done very well and I found I could not turn the documentary off! Kudos also to you Jennifer and crew!

The greatest struggle is the internal struggle.
The program was extremely important and inspirational. It illustrated exactly what your religion should lead you to "growth of self". Hamza took the tools, Quran and Sunnah, and became an elevated individual. He became an enlightened man, father, husband and social activist. He has overcome fear by welcoming the challenges of life and the trials that is promised by the Creator. He understands the true Jihad, the Jihad of the Nafs that will continue to soften the heart and unveil the LOVE. May you continue to embrace those elements that all religions have in common through your inter-faith endeavors and may they become the Nur for others. Kudos for Jennifer Taylor for the belief that music is universal and mankind may be healed by it!

Nicely done and thought provoking
An amazing movie that shows the human side of people that is usually ignored in the mainstream media. It is extremely thought provoking and anyone can learn from it. We need more media like this, an intriguing story, well shot and well edited. The beautiful thing about it was that it was not biased. The perspectives weren't just the Muslim people close to him but, also perspectives of people who weren't Muslim and people he worked for.
The disscutions the movie brings up are important to be disscussed in intelegent and intelectual diologues.
We(all of us) must open our minds, leave our cultural comfort zones, and learn from this beautiful, amazing human experience.

The real meaning
I saw the show and I am pleased at the way it presented the picture of how this young man found something to turn his life around. I am also pleased at the way Islam was presented. However....for the person that posted the comment about "jihad", please check the meaning of "jihad". The meaning of jihad means "struggle". Whether the struggle is internal (mentally, psycologically), or spiritually (a holy war is not necessarily a physical war, it can be a struggle within oneself as to his or her beliefs), or as in an actual war where either side is "struggling" for a favorable outcome. It can even mean something as mundane as in deciding to do what is right or wrong. It is a struggle/"jihad" for most to get through our everyday lives. Some of us struggle with ignorance over intelligence. I hope I have helped to make this a bit clearer to anyone who may not have known the real meaning of "jihad".

Well Done Indeed
I just finished watching this film with my 10 year daughter and we appreciated the "openness" and "realness" of Hamza's story. More importantly, I've noticed how Hamza matured over the course of this film and I pray the catalyst behind his maturity wasn't lost on the viewing public. Yes, the Message of Islam can get you there, but Hamza's success started with him MAKING a concerted EFFORT to be and get better.
Of all the "gems" presented in this film, I believe this film highlighted a few diamonds in our rough society:
1) For the muslims in and outside of this country:
- "(paraphrasing)if reading the Quran and studying the life of The Prophet doesn't soften your heart towards humanity, then you are not reading the Quran"
- Our Beloved Prophet (PBUH)was more than a "Holy Man" He established and developed treaties and alliances to further the well being of the early Muslims as well as their neighbors.
2) for everyone else:
- Islam in America is ingrained in the social fabric of this country. My generation seek nothing more than a place pray, a place to eat/sleep and to provide the best we can for our families...alienation at home faciliates passionate discontent for the new "American Way"
3) At the core of it all, there's one fundamental truth we are all One People seeking the pleasure and guidance of our Creator.

I loved it....a true rep of what a islamic youth is evolved into. Its very obvious that justin or who ever doesn't know how to read the translation of surah fathia..nor comprehend the last speech given by the prophet (pbum)..not to mention ignorance to its very true from coming from someone who only is lost in his own mind about Islam and wants others to feel the same desperation..Islam and Islamic law never instructs the killing of innocent people muslim or non..it stands for humanity..
the Translation of the surah fatayha is as follows..which we repeat in every prayer not only 5 times a day but whenever we want to connect to our creator..Transliteration English Translation
A'uzu billahi minashaitanir rajim I seek refuge in Allah from the outcast Satan
Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
'Al-Hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'Aalamin (1:1) Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds,(1:1)
'Ar-Rahmaanir-Rahiim (1:2) The Beneficent, the Merciful.(1:2)
Maaliki Yawmid-Diin; (1:3) Owner of the Day of Judgement.(1:3)
'Iyyaaka na'-budu wa 'iyyaaka nasta-'iin.(1:4) Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help. (1:4)
'Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqiim- (1:5) Show us the straight path,(1:5)
Siraatal-laziina 'an-'amta 'alay him- (1:6) The path of those whom Thou hast favoured; (1:6)
Gayril-magzuubi 'alay him wa laz-zaaalliin. (1:7) Not (the path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray. (1:7)
I don't see any cursing or blasphmey on jews, or christians...who are our brothers, and share the belief in one god..anyone who has defied their lord or has gone astray..shall be judged on the same day when we all are accounted for our sins..by our maker..
we as muslims or non, will continue to prevail and pray for people like mr. justin who will forever be lost in his translations of Islam..the only truth that will prevail until the end of time..as for mr. justin..he will be lost until then..

IMPORTANT QUERY FOR MUSLIMS
I'm not either a pie-in-the-sky multicultural liberal, nor am I a rabid Jihadwatch Neocon. I consider myself objective.
But I do have this question for all Muslims reading this:
Jason's (not very faithful) Catholic mother and family were interviewed about his conversion, and they reluctantly came to accept it. Is there one Muslim family on Planet Earth who would still talk to their child if they converted to Christianity and be so open and flowery as Hamza's mom was?
Answer please.

Thanks PBS for another high quality documentary about Muslims
I'd like to thank PBS for yet another high quality film about Muslims.
Last year, you gave us "Prince Among Slaves" about a Muslim Prince brought to the United States from Africa.
New Muslim Cool was a touching glimpse into the life of a real life American Muslim who is trying to make himself a better person by helping those around him.

Inspiring
I am so inspired by this young man. I want to be a better person. I admit I know little of the Muslim religion but this program makes me want to learn more. Most of all I was impressed by his ability to speak to a group of convicted men, of all ages, backgrounds - his message seems universally good. Despite his "controversial past", I was made at peace by watching him work and interact with his family.

IMPRESSIVE!
As a non- Muslim or active member of any institutionalized religion, it was amazing to see young people as myself struggling with jobs, families, and life in general, that share the same goals and aspirations, and with their Islamic beliefs. I did not only see Hamza as a Muslim, I saw him a young man, a father, and husband, struggling, but overcoming the temptations of the streets.
So many men, Latino, and black alike are not raising their children, and it is time that we begin sharing the entire story, that there are men who love and care about their families, and most of all God. These are the men that we should be praising not condemning because of their religious beliefs.
Wonderful story, wonderful film! Felicidades y buena suerte Hamza y familia.

Thank You
Thank you for broadcasting this film. To me it was not just about Islam in America, but about people - everyday people and their lives, struggles, hopes, and how they face their challenges and how they grow. It proves that we have more in common than we think. We need more films like this.
Again, many thanks to everyone involved in the making of the film, and to PBS for putting it on the air.

My thoughts
PEACE BE ONTO ALL READERS AND WATCHERS OF THE FILM. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I REALLY ENJOYED THIS FILM. IT COVERED SO MANY ASPECTS OF ISLAM. THAT ARE NOT SEEN OR HEARD OF IN MANY FILMS WHEN IT COMES TO ISLAM. SEE THIS FILM SHOWED HOW IT IS TO BE A MUSLIM. MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY, SOCIALLY, AND ECONOMICALY. IN THIS DAY AND TIME. THIS FILM TO ME IS VERY INSPIRING. IT SHOWS WHAT IT IS LIKE TO RAISE A FAMILY IN ISLAM. THE BEAUTY OF TWO FAMILIES COMING TOGETHER TO MAKE ONE. THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS THAT THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS WENT THROUGH. AS WELL AS THE INTERFAITH DIALOUGE. WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT IN THIS DAY AND TIME. I PRAY THAT THIS FILM HELPS TO OPEN THE EYES AND EARS OF THOSE WHO MAY BE BLIND AND DEAF. TO ISLAM AND ALSO TO FAMILY LIFE HEAR IN AMERICA. GOD WILLING

Skeptical, but Won over
Thank you POV/PBS for airing the film. I was skeptical about the hip-hop angle at first. Overall, I enjoyed the journey and growth of Hamza & extended family. I have a new perspective on Muslims & the Performing Arts - what a kick: once considered them oil and water.

An Amazing Movie
I loved the movie! I actually watched at school and our school Oceana High School were one of the first to watch it. I even got to hear him speak which was wonderful(he is such a good charismatic speaker). It was an amazing movie that I enjoyed and it was wonderful. The movie showed the true islamic ways and the struggles of an everyday life and it showed how Hamza converted to Islam and how he lived the Muslim life. I think this movie shows many aspects of the Islamic ways and I purely loved it.

I loved the documentary. I loved the music I came here to find a link to listen to more and saw Justins ignorant comments. It always amuses me that someone can actually try to preach like he knows about another persons culture and religion. I understand only because I can realate being native American. Struggles of someone's Dad
I enjoyed what little of the film I caught- I missed the part about the raid, so don't have a sense of what they went through at the beginning.
I think I enjoyed this so much because, well, if America weren't so all about racial and religious differences, we'd be watching a story about a young dad, trying to do his work, and being excited about being a good father and a good husband. And the story would still be compelling.
That it tells the story of a man who CHOOSES his own religion against the mainstream- a feat in an America where many feel just as Justin, above, do and either will say it with actions or use such harsh words, and that it tells the story of how a government whose very founding guarantees freedom from interference in religion WILL interfere anyhow is eye-opening. It's 2009, but we get the sense that the civil rights movement isn't really over.
Anyone in this country who cares about their own personal purposes, freedoms, and family, should see this.

kudos to Hamza Perez...
As Latinos who practice an Eastern religion - we send our praises to you and your family. You have figured out where PEACE & Godliness lie: within your family, in prayer, in the jails, in gangs, in your mosque. Some people twice your age still don't know that. We respect you greatly.....especially because you said (of the statement you had made in 2002) "I made a mistake" (do you know how BIG a person it takes to say that???)
As for the FBI & Dept. of Homeland Security raid of your mosque - it still upsets me- but you have to "let it go" (forgive) and leave it in God's hand - why? Because if you keep remembering it - they still have power over you, but if you forgive - their power diminishes (and your power from God increases). We were held over 4 hours by Dept. of Homeland Security coming back to U.S.A. from a Hindu wedding in Canada of some relatives. Because it was late and we had to get home and to work next day - we didn't bother to change from the wedding - so we crossed in saris, kurta salwar, lungis, wore "bindis" on our foreheads....and I guess just dressing in Eastern clothes made us automatic "terrorists". But we "let it go" and forgave so that they would no longer have any power over us. We can even laugh about it now (although it was very, very scary at the time - being humiliated for our religion, and being held against our will) - our daughter was 7-1/2 years old then....wow, what a "terrorist" she must have looked like! Concentrate on all the good you do - your family, your mosque, the jail, the gangs, the Interfaith Poetry group....what you do is very, very important and don't let anyone (or any group) undermine these God-given gifts you give to the world.
May Allah bless you & your family and Salaam Alekum!

I want to thank you for your tolerance of what is obviously a minority point of view. Like you, I'm disappointed when wrongdoing is successful, when freedom and justice fail. All the bloggers are good people who just want control over their own lives. But we have to realize there will always be those who want to control it for us. We have to deal with this or become enslaved. The first thing we can do is recognize fascist thought when we see it, whether it's the authorities, intolerant religious groups, the Klan, or preachy film makers.

This is definitely a 5 star movie. more left propaganda from pBS
PBS continues to pump out anti-west indoctrination, in this case by glorifying a totalitarian misogynous ideology.
Islam is not, and could never be, COOL. It does not recognize the equality of women which has been a long struggle to achieve in this country. Now immigration is bringing a belief system that would put women back in chains.
People who think Islam can be cool need a vacation in Saudi. A few hip hop tunes can't hide the unmistakable inequality.

It was a great movie how muslims in America struggle against discrimination and much more, itstrue god does choose whoever is leaded to the straight path, who are willing, Dana is obviously wrong In fact, Islam is the only religion to specifically anounce womens right, women to be treated right, and so on husbands, men , who beat women is sinful,,,, Thank God thiswas aired and my family able to see, and hopefully understand what Islam means its is not a violent religion at all I hope my parents and family wil be able to accept Islam, and not be dissapointed in me, I relate to Hamza in several ways , cept i dont do drugs ,drink or anything like it,I am in a catholic religion (thanks to the spaniards and so on) I did my 1st comunion, but im ready to get out ofthat church and study more of islam, going to mosque and so on, alot of pressure is on me hopefly i'll be able to handle it,there is always Jihad everywhere.Inshallah I will be able to convert this year,my parents will be able to understand and accept it and to those poor muslims in the war or whomever struggling finds peace and happiness.

Missing the Point
I am a Catholic Christian, and I loved this film. Now that is out of the way. I thought the film brought a lot to light. That regardless of religion, we should all be brothers and sisters and work more on ourselves, then trying to change other people, and their ways. If we all tried everyday to better ourselves, and stopped complaining about what we deserve and what we don't have and what other people do, then the world and the people in it would take care of itself with God as our witness. I thought Hamza'a music was inspirational, and everyone should feel that way about something. I play softball for instance. And for anyone who believes this film was ONLY about Hamza and the Muslim faith, you are misguided. This film is about acceptance of all cultures, races, nationalities, and religions. I do not know much of anything about the Muslim Faith and their regard for woman being under men, so I will not comment on that, but lets hope that's not in there anywhere. As for the film, BRAVO!! Thank you for sharing alternate opinions and journeys. For me, the real truth of this story is better than anything TV writers/producers can make up. Real life truly is inspirational.

I love the coments shooting down the movie...
Greetings/Peace, everyone...even to the haters...
It's very interesting to see the comments shooting down the film...which don't seem to address anything covered therein. Clearly, people are going to see what they want to see and exclude everything else. If you approach watching this movie with an existing bias - only hoping to see things that confirm your prejudiced opinion, however wrong or misinformed it may be - then the mold is already cast. You're wasting your time.
There are definitely agent provocateurs/professional haters posting here just to bring darkness to an effort attempting to shine some light. You can't please everybody - and nor should you seek to do so. All that we can do is try to tell the truth and be honest to the best of our ability as individuals searching for it. And for those trying to obscure that truth - you are doing the work of cursed beings...and will be awarded accordingly as long as you're engaged in that work...
so...hate on my haters...you're day will surely come...just as surely that we all have a date with death...
bright moments & joy to the universe...to all lovers, truth seekers, and possessors/recipients of mercy from The One in Whose Hand our souls reside...
....To The Diety we belong and to Him is our return...

Brings up some questions
I give this film 5 stars because it is just that. An excellent documentary about one man´s life and about his community. Some of the scenes in which the muslim community was gathered made me wish I was there because it looked so comfortable. Anyways, I don´t think the purpose of the film is to show what true Islam is about. I mean, that is apart of it, but people shouldn´t expect one man´s story to explain the whole meaning of a whole religion, no matter what religion it is. But this film gives me a very good glimpse into the meaning in Islam in this particular man´s life. And I love how the film shows Muslim people interacting naturally with non-muslim people, because in my experience, that is the way it is. When Hamza was teaching in the prison, he wasn´t there actively converting people to Islam. Yes, they all knew he was Muslim and he would teach people from him Islamic base of knowledge which is very universal and I saw him helping people to connect to God regardless of whether they were Muslim or not. But the film did bring up some questions. I have the same question as some of the other people who have posted before me. Hamza does become Muslim and his family comes to accept this. Can someone please answer the question, do Muslim families anywhere in the world regularly accept their children and continue to welcome them if they convert? I really want to know. I use to seriously think about becoming Muslim. But the main reason I didn´t was because I learned somewhere that if you convert out of Islam, you will be killed, or at least that is what the Koran dictates, if I´m not mistaken. That made me afraid. I´m not trying to be rude. I really want to know. I actually have never heard of people being able to leave Islam peacefully.

Great Film ! ---> New Muslim Cool
JazakAllahu khair to Brother Hazma and his family. This is a wonderful film and it needs to be played at an earlier time. On the whole the film provides an excellent model of striving for the sake of Allah alone and his causes by Hazma and his Wife. I am amazed at his acts of charity in establishing the masjid and initiating dawah in the prison system, all while starting a family of his own and under constant suspicion and harassment by the FBI.
I am aware that some people do not share the view that Islam is a religion of peace and mercy, however, New Muslim Cool provides only ONE example of the true followers of Islam. The actions of brother Hazma and his Wife only shows a part of Allah's Mercy to humankind as demonstrated by their deeds and manners.
As a student of Islam, and to any thinking person, the deeds of Brother Hazma only shows that no seed that Allah sends down will ever perish!
May peace and blessings be on our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Alaihi salaam).

New Muslim Cool
This POV film was excellent. It showed real people with real issues. It did not glamorize nor exaggerate. It showed Hamza's true inner core and some of the central tenets of Islam. The idea of Jihad as "struggle," especially struggle with the inner self is spot on. And I really liked when Hamza said that receiving challenges shows that God loves you because you have something to learn from the situation. P.S.- We all have something to learn from the film.

universal brotherhood/sisterhood
I have to say that watching this movie today was a privilege. New Muslim Cool, the story of Hamza, and other stories like his need to be shared today more than ever. I am Catholic and deeply concerned for issues of justice and equality. The work between Jewish and Muslim artists was inspiring and gives me hope to a future United States and world that is more compassionate and aware of the suffering of others. To some of the negative comments that have been made, you are nothing more than yet another example of hate or apathy within this country. All people are on a spiritual journey (regardless of what they would call it themselves), and each person can choose to live their lives guided by love or hatred. To see other religious people, (even worse my fellow Christians or Catholics) react to Hamza's narrative with anger is disappointing. It seems that Hamza lives his life more by our Bible that some Christians. Matthew 25:36 "I was in prison and you came to me" He is dedicating his life to the least of our brothers and sisters. This is something that Christians and Catholics seem to so conveniently forget about our faith.
Again, this was a great movie. I enjoyed his story and his journey. I look forward to more documentaries of strong religious people looking to improve their communities and work for justice.

With friends like this...
With friends like the makers of this film and its subject, the Muslim community doesn't need enemies. I wish Jayson and his family the best, and see many good qualities in him. But it is clear he is as ignorant of and holds precisely the same stereotypes about Islam as an exotic, violent faith as it's detractors. The only difference is he sees these as qualities to be admired. In 'the hood', where Unfortunately, for 'Hamza', Islam is often more akin to an immersive role playing game than a legitimate religious conversion; a fanciful escape from one's true identity at core not much different than a middle class WASP taking on exotic identity in World of Warcraft to escape a reality which seems frightfully lame by comparison. In any event, it's profoundly insulting and condescending to legitimate Muslims to present this kid with his 'gangsta chic' image of Islam as a legitimate representative of the faith, as is the fact he could be hired as an Imam.

Amazing Point of View
I'm from Chicago and I'm a Persian American. We as citizens of the United States and the world need to be more tolerant of each other in our own country and abroad no matter what religious or ethnic background we are. We need to look at forest instead of the trees. Not all Muslims are bad people nor are all white people good people either. Look at Iran the people of the country are finally standing up to there government. People have a right to live there life and be part of the community and country. We all have a right to live our lives. My father was Muslim, he was from Iran, and he fought in the Iranian and then the U.S. armies. The one thing that stood out about my father was that he was a friend to everybody and he would help out anyone in need. He was a good Muslim. At his funeral this past November there where people of all walks of life there and he had over 400 people there. The thing I heard from almost of the speeches from people that new him was that he was my best friend. These were veterans, masonic brothers, neighbors, family members, friends, people from the V.A. hospital (where he volunteered for over 25 years and got a call to service award from the president a few years earlier), jews, christians, muslims, blacks, whites, Latinos, Asians, gays, striaghts and you name it came out to speak about him and to remember him. Look Muslims are and can be good people too. They are like you and me they even could be you and me. To fear them as a whole because of a few bad apples is wrong. Some of my fathers best friends were Jews. We can learn a lot from my dad and Perez. He made his mistakes and he found his salvation. He is better person because of it. I myself am not a Muslim but I have a belief in God. I think tolerance is the key. For hate in any word is just another four letter word that is definitely a bad word.

New Muslim Cool. Absolutely!
This film is excellent. The greatest part of the film is Hamza's interactions with the women in his life. He shows love, faith and compassion to his abuela as he kneels on the ground to rub her feet, to his mother when he kisses her on the cheek, to his wife as he strokes her head, and to his daughters by trying to be a better man.
In the mainstream media, I've never seen a Muslim man shown to have such love and respect for the women in his life, and I assumed that Muslim women were victims of a religious and misogynistic ideology that relegated them to an inferior status. I was proven wrong and made better for it.
Thank you to the director, Hamza, his family and his entire community for sharing this wonderful story.

Re: With friends like this...
Mahmood:
Despite having read numerous messages expressing hatred for this film, what it stands to represent, and for Islam in its entirety, I felt compelled to post a comment only in response to your own post.
I find your view of Mr. Perez's beliefs & lifestyle extremely distasteful and unbelievably judgemental. You may not have shared his experiences or his views, but that does not make them invalid or any less credible than your own.
Lastly, I'm shocked at your audacity in referring to "legitimate Muslims". Who are you to classify any human being as legitimate or otherwise? What assurance do you have that YOU yourself are 'legitimate'? The joke may very well be on you.
You've presented yourself as a very arrogant and self-righteous individual. Check yourself brother.

This film was garbage! Thats just what we need, more exploitation of the poor and ignorant by Imams in our prison systems. I am sure that the father of the murdered Army Resruitment officer who wa killed by a man who was converted to Islam in prison, would be as horified by this documantary as I was. The producer of this film is a liberal cliche. She obviously has no knowledge of Islam.
I would recommed a much better film, The Stoning of Soriya M.. Or just read the misogynist's manifesto, the Koran and visit some Mosques and Muslim countries. They treat their women worse than animals!
Read Aayan Hirsi Ali's "Infidel."
I have studied Arabic, the Koran and have been in Mosques and many Muslim countries. America had better wake up from their delusion. Islam is a disease that is spreading slowly through the Western world.

Islam - a unifying force!
I just finished watching the movie and was very pleased with its delivery. I felt it depicted the every day struggle any one would have when he//she decides to become one with God. The beauty about Islam is that it is a unifying force which crosses many boundaries and unifies all people wanting to live in peace. That's why Islam comes when all else fails. BRAVO New Muslim Cool!!

Proud of this film!
This film gives its audience wonderful insight into the American Muslim and converted Muslim experience! I had very little knowledge about the rich cultures developing among American Muslim communities. As an Egyptian-American Muslim college student, I could so easily relate to their struggles and Jason's search for his ideal self. Jason's collaboration with his Jewish neighbor and his discussion-leading in jail, open to people of all faiths and backgrounds, was so inspiring. The film captured so much of the true peaceful Muslim essence. Thank you so much, Jennifer Taylor, PBS and POV, for your continued wonderful projects.

Hope!
This was an excellent documentary...it made me cry. It shows that we should never give up and reminded me that life is a constant struggle.
No matter how much money, power, lust, fame or other worldly things we have, unless we feed our soul, we can never be content.
Our purpose in life is to do everything for the sake of God and through that we can feed our soul.

Realistic & Inspiring
As-Salaamu Alaikum and Peace Be Unto You, Hamza, your family and the readers.
As a revert to Al-Islam for more than 30 years, having accepted the faith in its entirety when in my early twenties-- I know from my own personal experiences and from those of sisters and brothers I have come to know over the years that true belief will change your life! Whatever your "faith"-- live it with all of your heart and you will find that "peace,""patience," "perseverance," and "prayer" are the everyday practice of "faithful" people-- not casting fault, slurs and negative comparisons. Hamza and his entire family are admirable, honorable people whose images are inspiring and honest to the experiences that many of us coming to Islam recall. Not disparities within our families whatever faith one is inclined to: we come to understand that righteous living is what Allah (God) wants for us and that it is fully possible. I truly enjoyed this film and I hope every openminded, hopeful person, especially young persons who have/are living the lifestyle that Hamza left behind (as have many of us) recognize the inherent good within and strive to please his or her Lord first and foremost-- a life of good deeds and strong faith is what awaits you-- not fear, extremism or disappointment!

An advice for my brother Muslim
I watched this show and I admired your dedication and enthusiasm. However, I would like to let you know that we Muslims think that Islamic Law is the only way of life and we forget that we live in US that has its own constitution that we must follow and obey as well. Having a sex offender in your Mosque that day caused all the problems for you brothers. This was not a test from God, this was a mistake from you guys and you had to deal with the consequences. Mosques must be regulated the same way as Churches and other worship places in the US. I know sometimes you guys try to help the needy by letting them sleep in the mosque, but how do you know who those people are? Are they someone in trouble with the law as in this case, are they people who may even hurt you?...etc. Our loyalty to our religion does not take away from our loyalty to US. We can be Muslim Americans and we must obey the Laws that 99% of the rest of the population follow and obey, we are no different than them.
As far as your work in Jail, I really liked what you have done and how you approached the topics…etc but you must spread the words that we cannot say all the bad things about the US and the government and expect to have government jobs later. One bad thing you say can hunt you for the rest of your life. US is a great place to live in and I love it with all my heart because it made me a better person and I feel respected and protected. Back in the place where I was born, I was just a number, if I die or disappear, no one would care except my family and friends. US will fight for its citizen no matter where you are, can you honestly say this about any Arabic country?

Looks are decieving
When I first saw the trailer I thought this is another liberal view of Islam and to distort it and I continued to believe this in the first 20 minutes of the film. However as the film progressed it showed the true islam in guiding Hamza thru the daily life struggles we have. By the end of the movie I considered Hamza a brother who points out that he must focus on family and if that is the case life becomes easier since we raise our children around love and dignity to ourselves and to allah.
Hamza stay strong and may allah assist you with your life ...salam zakaria

advice for my muslim brother
The film was excellent, I appreciate even the negative comments as they are a jumping point for further conversation. Rahel, I do know people who have left islam, even in my own family and we show them love like we always did. Brother Matty, do you really know the history of everyone that enters your mosque or church, do they fill out a criminal record check before entering? As far as legitimate muslims go, be very careful ahki, unless you can see into the hearts of others, Only ALLAH knows what is in the hearts of the human.

THANK YOU PBS AND POV!!!
This movie was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I cannot even begin to explain how refreshing it was to see Islam portrayed in a realistic light. As I've grown older, and my knowledge about Islam has increased so has my love for it. The best advice I can give anyone is to do their own research and find out what Islam truly is for themselves. Do not let the media or websites like Jihadwatch (which are pure garbage) be the reason for your ignorance. Islam is a religion of peace, love and tolerance. I pray that the day when everyone realizes this comes soon.
Thank you PBS for being willing to show this documentary and thanks Jennifer Taylor for creating it.
Thanks Hamza Perez for being willing to share your life and your struggles with us. May Allah reward you for opening the minds of countless viewers.
Lastly, I hope PBS shows this again because I know countless people that missed the opportunity the first around and many more that wish to see it again!

Thank you!
In an era where "Islamophobia" seems to be near an all-time high, I found this to be a wonderful film which offered a refreshing perspective of the lives of Muslims in the US. I felt it helped to convey the truth about American Muslims -- who ultimately, despite their often-differing beliefs, are just like everyone else, as they face similar struggles and live similar lives. The film depicted Islam as the positive force that it is meant to be -- one of peace and compassion-- rather than the the violent extremism it is made out to be by the media.
Thank you PBS, for airing this wonderful program. I sincerely appreciate you efforts to break away from the mold of mainstream media, and hope that you will air similar programs in the future.

I can assure you, deceit will get you nowhere!
When you quote the Quran, it is unethical to quote it out of context to make it seem to mean something it doesn’t! You quote “Sura 9:5 (The Verse of the Sword) one of the last sura's advocated unrestrained holy war against non-muslims”, but fail to quote the verse BEFORE and the verse AFTER it to put it in CONTEXT, since it is actually talking about the idol worshippers of Mecca who has broken their treaty with Mohammed and killed the Muslims:
Sura 9:4, “Except those of the pagans with whom you have a treaty, and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor have supported anyone against you. So fulfill their treaty to them for the end of their term. Surely Allah loves the pious”.
And Sura 9:6, “And if anyone of the non-believers (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the Word of Allah (the Qur'an), and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men who know not.”
It is also UNETHICAL to LIE about Mohammed’s last sermon, alleging that he “Muhammad in his last speech before a group of Muslims and on his deathbed cursed Jews and Christians.”
Here is the WHOLE last speech of Mohammed:
“O People, listen well to my words, for I do not know whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and TAKE THESE WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.
O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Treat others justly so that no one would be unjust to you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all usury obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer inequity. God has judged that there shall be no usury and that all the usury due to `Abbas ibn `Abd al Muttalib shall henceforth be waived.
Every right arising out of homicide in pre-Islamic days is henceforth waived and the first such right that I waive is that arising from the murder of Rabi`ah ibn al Harith ibn `Abd al Muttalib.
O Men, the Unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calendar in order to make permissible that which God forbade, and to forbid that which God has made permissible. With God the months are twelve in number. Four of them are sacred, three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumada and Sha`ban. Beware of the devil, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.
O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have right over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under God's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to commit adultery.
O People, listen to me in earnest, worship ALLAH, perform your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your financial obligation (zakah) of your wealth. Perform Hajj if you can afford to.
All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Know that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.
Remember, one day you will appear before ALLAH and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.
O People, NO PROPHET OR APOSTLE WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand my words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Book of God (the QUR'AN) and my example (the SUNNAH), and if you follow these you will never go astray.
All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness O God, that I have conveyed Your Message to Your people.”
Regarding Jews and Christians, Islam states:
“And argue not with the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in a good manner), except with those of them who do wrong; and say (to them): ‘We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you; our God and your God is One, and to Him we have submitted (as Muslims)” The Holy Quran, 29:46.
Narrated by Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila: “…A funeral procession passed in front of the Prophet and he stood up (in respect). When he was told that it was the coffin of a Jew, he said, ‘Is he not a living being (soul)?” The Sunnah, Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol 2, Book 23, #399.
Narrated by ‘Aisha, the wife of the Prophet: “A group of Jews entered upon the Prophet and said, ‘As-Samu-alaykom’ (it sounds very much like “assalamo alaykom [peace be upon you] but they were wishing him death instead). I understood it and said, ‘death and the curse of Allah be upon you’. Allah’s Apostle said ‘Be calm, ‘Aisha! Allah loves that one should be kind and lenient in all matters’…” The Sunnah, Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 53.
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘Whoever hurts a non-Muslim person under protection, I am his adversary, and I shall be an adversary to him on the Day of Resurrection” (Narrated by Al-Khatib).
SO DON’T LIE!

Bow down bow down bow down...
Islam bashing via ignorance.
You go Laila.
I will not defend what is evident and profound. The Qu'ran has never been change since its revelation to the Prophet(S). Nuff said.
This documentary is a wonderful, informative, TRUTHFUL, honest portrayal about one man's journey to save his soul by SUBMITTING TO THE WILL OF THE CREATOR OF ALL OF MANKIND, THE UNIVERSE, THE SEEN AND THE UNSEEN! Oh, by the way for those of you who don't know, this transistion does not happen over night. I say this to those who don't know because they have not ventured to try to know and to those who never knew what is was like to be Non-Muslim because they were raised from infants as Muslims. Let's not forget cultural influences in Islam through the centuries.
Allah is the All Knower All Hearer and All Seer. Suli, I hear you - Only Allah Knows what is in our hearts. Allah Knew what I carried in my heart in jahaliyah, and He Guided me to the light. I know it sounds corny, but, I was lost but now I am found.
I took my Shahadah at the age of 38 and I am now 52, Subhan-Allah.
People like Hamza and I used to "prey" in the dark now we PRAY in the light, along side w/other Muslims at fixed times - guess what????!!!?? ALL AROUND THE EARTH!
Some of you ought to be ashamed of yourselves in your ignorance...May Allah Guide You.
By the way, did Michael Jackson die Muslim? People say he doesn't look like a Muslim but neither does his brother Jermaine. Jermaine stated on national TV May Allah Be With you always to his deceased brother. Jermain became Muslim when he bore witness to the salat of hundreds of Muslim in Saudi Arabia. He wanted to know what is this religion where everyone prays as one. Al hamdu lillah.
Jacques Cousteau found the place in the ocean where the salt water and fresh water meets. He became Muslim prior to his death.
Allah (T) says, "...and if you come to walking I will come to you running..." Subhan-Allah.
You got to be there to understand...Bow down, bow down, bow down...feel me?
Excuse my errors. I was feeling this and typing fast... smile...

New Muslim Cool is an eye opener. I am so happy to see a film that documents what it is like for converts to Islam. In many ways. . .it was as though scenes from my life were being mirrored on the screen. I was moved by the interfaith outreach as well. . .this is something that cannot be underestimated as it is such an important part of our religion. As Muslims, we are not taught to go out and kill everyone who believes differently from us. We are taught to tolerate individual differences in a loving way. We are also forbidden to force anyone to convert to our religion, as you cannot force someone to believe something they simply do not. Thank you so much for airing such a thoughtful and well-researched film that will hopefully break down these self-constructed barriers that have existed for far too long. Together, we can make a difference!

WOW
Some people are really loony on this comment posting thing lol.
For one lying and half truths will get you know where (no need for names as the people im talking about , know who I'm talking about)
Secondly, just because people come in typing that they understand arabic and travel dosent mean they have
Thridly if you're going to judge a religion on the way a culture treats any human woman or man then most of the world would be disgusted at how a christian country like america (with all of its freedoms) has the highest, gang related killings, rapes, murders, cannibalism, arsonist, alcoholics, druggies, drug dealers, incest, mass suicide killings (did i mention murder) child molestations, std infections, obesity, child abuse, nursing homes (throwing away old people and im not talking about the ones that need medical care) car thefts, over crowded prisons, death penalties, thefts, perverts, rapists, intolerant people (who call people names, kill them or slander them to make themselves look better....break every rule in the 10 commandments and the list goes on...pretty much to sum it up..
.DONT BE IGNORANT ENOUGH TO JUDGE A RELIGION BY A COUNTRIES CULTURAL PRACTICES....if people did Christianity who actually STARTED MOST OF THE CRUSADES and the convert or be killed practices all over the world....WOULD HAVE STOPPED GROWING A LONG TIME AGO......
I know you guys are smart enough to read a HOLY BOOK to find the truth WHETHER IT BE A QURAN, TORAH OR BIBLE not following a country of fanatics who point the finger to call other people fanatics!
To clear up a few things:
Women convert to islam twice more over than men (hmmm maybe we do get some of thoes elusive missing rights)
WE DONT WORSHIP MUHAMMAD
WE ARENT ALL MIDDLE EASTERN
WE ARE STRONG IN OUR BELIEF
AND IM A BELIVE IN PRACTICING WHAT YOU PREACH
SO TO ALL OF YOU (RELIGION QUESTIONALBLE) PEOPLEOUT THERE WHO ARE ALL BASHING PEOPLE...WHAT HAPPENED TO SETTING AN EXAMPLE BY YOU OWN SCRIPTURES...I MEAN JESUS DIDN'T END HIS LEGACY BY SAYING: "I AM THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIGHT FOLLOW ME OR YOUR ALL DESERT DWELLING NEMROD IDIOTS AND DID I MENTION LOST STUPID IGNORANT IDIOTS!" LOL......NO HE DIDNT HE WAS SENT TO THE JEWS BUT HIS MESSAGE EXPANDED TO ALL OF MANKIND...SET HIS EXAMPLE AND STOP DISRESPECTING HIM BY CALLING YOUR SELFS CHRISTIANS AND ACTING LIKE BARBARIANS AS THE EARLY LOST PEOPLE WERE!
OH AND DID I MENTION HOW SAD IT WAS THAT YOU GUYS ARE LEAVING MESSAGES CALLING THIS FILM IN A SHORT SENSE (KISSING MUSLIMS BUTTS OR PRAISING MUSLIMS) I MEAN WHAT DID YOU WANT IT TO SHOW MUSLIMS BEING KILLED OR DEGRIGATED...AND YOU SAY THAT MUSLIMS WOMEN GET TREATED BADLY BUT YOU WATCHED THIS FILM HOPING TO SEE IT...YOU WANT TO SEE IT CAUSE YOU ARE PROPAGATING IT..DUH!

RE:To all christian brothers
Position of Jesus in Islam :
1.Islam is the only non-Christian faith, which makes it an article of faith to believe in Jesus (pbuh). No Muslim is a Muslim if he does not believe in Jesus (pbuh).
2.We believe that he was one of the mightiest Messengers of Allah (swt).
3.We believe that he was born miraculously, without any male intervention, which many modern day Christians do not believe.
4.We believe he was the Messiah translated Christ (pbuh).
5.We believe that he gave life to the dead with God’s permission.
6.We believe that he healed those born blind, and the lepers with God’s permission.
Concept of God in Christianity:
New Testament:
Jesus Christ Never Claimed Divinity :
One may ask, if both Muslims and Christians love and respect Jesus (pbuh), where exactly is the parting of ways? The major difference between Islam and Christianity is the Christians’ insistence on the supposed divinity of Christ (pbuh). A study of the Christian scriptures reveals that Jesus (pbuh) never claimed divinity. In fact there is not a single unequivocal statement in the entire Bible where Jesus (pbuh) himself says, "I am God" or where he says, "worship me". In fact the Bible contains statements attributed to Jesus (pbuh) in which he preached quite the contrary. The following statements in the Bible are attributed to Jesus Christ ,
"My Father is greater than I." [The Bible, John 14:28]
"My Father is greater than all." [The Bible, John 10:29]
"…I cast out devils by the Spirit of God…." [The Bible, Mathew 12:28]
"…I with the finger of God cast out devils…." [The Bible, Luke 11:20]
"I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgement is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." [The Bible, John 5:30]
God Sent Jesus' (pbuh) :
The Bible mentions the prophetic nature of Jesus (pbuh) mission in the following verses ,
"… and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me." [The Bible, John 14:24]
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou has sent." [The Bible, John 17:3]
Old Testament :
God is One :
The following verse from the book of Deuteronomy contains an exhortation from Moses (pbuh) :::
"Shama Israelu Adonai Ila Hayno Adna Ikhad".
It is a Hebrew quotation which means:
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord"
[The Bible, Deuteronomy 6:4]
Oneness of God in the Book of Isaiah :
The following verses are from the Book of Isaiah:
"I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour."
[The Bible, Isaiah 43:11]
"I am Lord, and there is none else, there is no God besides me."
[The Bible, Isaiah 45:5]
"I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me."
[The Bible, Isaiah 46:9]
Old Testament condemns idol worship .
Old Testament condemns idol worship in the following verses:
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:"
"Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God."
[The Bible, Exodus 20:3-5]
A similar message is repeated in the book of Deuteronomy:
"Thou shalt have none other gods before me."
"Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that in the earth beneath, or that is in the water beneath the earth."
"Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God."
[The Bible, Deuteronomy 5:7-9]
Conclusion:
-------------
If Christian is a person who follows the teachings of Christ (pbuh) and not one who worships Christ (pbuh). (We are more Christian than the Christians themselves).
Muslim is a person who submits his will to Allah.
Jesus (pbuh) said, "not my will but thy will be done." i.e. Muslim.
John 5:30
Al-Qur'an 5:82.

Everyone Please Read
I have read the comments here and on several different websites. The problem I have is the heartlessness and judgemental comments that people make and I would like to make a few comments.
Islam, Christianity, and Judiasm all teach that ONLY ONE has the right to make judgement. That is ALLAH(GOD)! NO man has the right to judge any other man.
I would like to point out one FACT. In the past few decades, there has been several groups that claimed to be Christians. They were actual cults, where the leader claimed to be God or a Prophet sent by God. In these cults, children have been molested, impregnanted, people have been beaten, abused, and, in some cases, killed.
As soon as anyone said that this was a Christian that was the leader of the group, Christians all over the United States responded saying that these people claim to be Christians but they are not, They are hypocrites and some even said that they were the anti-Christ. This response was accepted by the media and by the public.
Why then when another group commits horrible and unthinkable acts and it is said that they are Muslims, Why does the majority of the people in the United States not accept the FACT that these people are not TRUE Muslims? Instead of searching to find the TRUTH about Islam, you are only searching for bits and pieces of ayas(verses) from the Quran on a website and from information that other websites post themselves. You are not searching to see what Islam is truly about, you are simply looking for a few simple words that will make you feel that you pre-judgement and hatred is justified.
If you really wanted to see what Islam is about, you would go to your local library and check out a Quran (or sit at the library and read it) and read word for word what people continually take out of context. Read the Quran the way it should be read (in its entirity). I'm not asking anyone to convert to Islam, my purpose is only for you to gain the neccesary knowledge about Islam to understand that these horrible acts were NOT done for Islam. These acts are completely against Islam.
Just to clear up one misconception, JIHAD is NOT, I repeat IS NOT, holy war. JIHAD is fighting for the cause of ALLAH. This is a personal battle that you fight within yourself against Shaytan(Satan) and your own human desires(like drinking, smoking, sex without marriage, adultery, etc.).
If you would like to comment back to me, email me at commentback@hotmail.com. Everyone's comments, questions, etc. are welcome(critical, judgemental, rude, hateful, any and all). You can ask me anything about Islam, or my religious background.
*I would like to say again that I am not in any way attempting to get you to convert to Islam, I just want to give you a better understanding of Islam.
Thank you for reading my comment and I hope I will talk with some of you soon InshaAllah.

This film will be screening at MuslimFest on Aug 1-2 in Mississauga, ON. This award-winning festival is back for it's fifth year, and the organizers are preparing for an even bigger and better event. This is a great event for families and young people. Admission is free, with the exception of a few events such as comedy acts, film festivals, apostate executions and a capella concerts. I'm just kidding about the executions,of course, but i looooove the way the wackjobs go nuts over that garbage. I'm looking forward to a screening of this film, and if I can squeeze it in, a pre-screening discussion.
Attention wackjobs: Rick Warren, author of the 30-million selling The Purpose Driven LIfe, spent July 4th in Washington DC, addressing 8,000 Muslims at the annual Islamic Society of North America conference. If the so-called heathens are such a radical threat, would someone of his caliber either receive or even accept an invite like this? Get real.
Peace to everyone.

Unfortunately, here is an example of what is committed in the name of Islam when Muslims are the majority:
July 25, 2009
Religious unrest in Egypt
MINYA (Egypt) - HUNDREDS of Egyptian Muslims tried on Friday to set on fire the home of a Coptic Christian in southern Egypt after he announced plans to turn it into a church, a security official said.
The Christian had angered Muslims in the village of Hawasliya, near the southern town of Minya, earlier this week by saying he would turn his four-storey house into a church, he told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Residents complained to the authorities arguing that the Copt did not have the proper permit to carry out the transformation and their anger boiled over after Friday weekly Muslim prayers, the official added.
Emerging from mosques, around 500 Muslims gathered near the house to try to set it ablaze but the police prevented it.
The protesters managed nevertheless to set fire to nearby stables owned by Christians, killing six animals, including cows and sheep, the official said.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds and detained 20 protesters, he added.

Excellent film!!!!!!
I loved New Muslim Cool and the opportunity afforded me to watch Hamza grow as a spiritual man, husband, father, and activist. What a humble man, and a true example of redemption.

Muslims - Five Percenters - and Hip Hop
Just found this film - can't wait to watch it -- Our nation is so young at a couple hundred years old...but the rise of hip hop in urban communities is even newer and we still have a lot to learn from the connection between hip hop, urban culture, and religion/spirituality in general.
In the late 80's and 90's the Five Percent Nation of Islam (Nation of Gods and Earths) picked up a lot of steam within urban African-American communities as a source of motivation and spiritual guidance.

Thanks Suli for the education
To Suli who responded to me on June 30, thanks. I needed to hear that, and what you said makes sense. Of course there are as many possibilities as there are families and communities.

Hamza's response
I would like to say thank you for all the positive feed back about the film.. If you saw anything good in the film truly it's came from God and God alone.. If your saw anything bad or negative.. truly that came from me.. For the negative comments if anything you say is true then may God forgive us...
As muslims we feel that through out time things will get worse for humanity including muslims... The Prophet Muhammad 9peace be upon him)taught us that the only thing that will save us is us being a God fearing people and The Return of Jesus Christ Peace Be upon Him..
When Jesus returns he will revive the way humanity should worship God it's called the Sunna (in english "The Way")
We are all far from being good represenatives of the teachings of God... To All the Christians... I Pray That God will bless you with the best of this life as well as the next.. and that he fill your hearts with the light of the blessed Jesus Christ the son of our blessed virgin Mary..
salams (Peace)

Re: are you guys insane?? (Wojtek Czech)
Dear Wojtek Czech ,
You really need to understand the difference between "ISLAM" and "MUSLIM". The allegations that you are making is the practice of some ignorant "MUSLIMS" who do not have proper knowledge of "ISLAM". Just like yourself, they also need to be educated on "ISLAM".
If you want to judge Islam, refer to the "original source" i,e The Holy Quran and The Sahih Hadith (sayings of the prophed (PBUH)) and check for your self that there is no such things as honor killing or killing innocent people in "ISLAM". And if you want an example of a best "MUSLIM", checkout the life history of the prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and his companions(peace be upon them all).
Look at it this way, if a person who does not know how to drive a car at all is given a BMW to drive. If this person gets into an accident, it would be WRONG to say that BMW is not a good car! Of course that person is NOT a good driver!
Similarly, if a so called "MUSLIM" does something bad due to his/her ignorance, you can not blame "ISLAM" for that.
"ISLAM" gives more rights to women than any other religion. To learn about woman's rights in Islam, watch this video (I'm posting the link for the first part only, you can find the remaining parts easily):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVafoZrYoiE
Do not jump to a conclusion by reading some article about "ISLAM" by somebody else or any documentary about "ISLAM" that some body else has made or by observing ignorant "MUSLIMS" who do not have proper knowledge of "ISLAM".
So, before making any allegation or writing any hateful comment about "ISLAM", please bother yourself a little bit and study the "original sources" of "ISLAM" i.e The Holy Quran and The Sahih Hadith. And then I would love to see any of these allegations with reference to the "original sources" of "ISLAM" if you could find any not some examples of a few IGNORANT "MUSLIMS"
Most of the allegations you made e.g. honor killing, enslaving women etc are CULTURAL PRACTICES that were there in the society even before "ISLAM".They have nothing to do with "ISLAM". They are found in some so called "MUSLIM" countries where "Culture" is more dominant than the religion.
I hope I made it clear to every body. Salam (peace)

Do your BEST and leave the REST
To Hamza Perez: Roses are red and Violets are blue. May this day brings you love, happiness and Allah's favour. May Allah protect you and your family (+ Muslims)against sudden death and darkness of the grave.
Now Hamza, since Allah has made you the cynosure of all eyes (entire world), the envy of all, a blessing to your nation and Islam, and a delight to Himself.
Please "Do your BEST and leave the REST".
To me, It is not possible for the entire WORLD be either Christian, Jew or Muslim. THe choice is yours. Any one(religion) your are practising, KNOW your GOD.
Pastor or Imam may pray for you, and you may think that they are the righteous person, DO YOU KNOW THeIR "PRIVACY" since Pastor or IMam are human being which means they can commit adultery, theft, lied and Mislead their followers.
My brothers and Sisters in the World, Arab Militants (Al-Qaida) are not Muslims just that they were born in Arab countries that those not mean that any crime they commit must surely be in the name of Islam.
Note that; every countrirs has it own hoodlums, criminals and Militants.
For example; my country(Nigeria) has Niger Delta Militants who are 70% Christians, in the Niger Delta area. They abducted, Steal, set pipelines ablazed and cursed violence in the region. presently, they just kipnapped our Ex-Central Bank Governor Prof. Charles Soludo's father (Pa Simeon Soludo) for ransom.

What can we called this people....Christian Sect or Extremist etc
Please "The Faithfuls" KNOW YOUR GOD, as for me, I strongly believe that JESUS (PBUH) is the Messenger of ALLAH and Second to the last Prophet before The Prophet MOHAMMED (PBUH) as stated in the Only Book...
Please "Do your BEST and Leave the REST"....
To those who have viewed my Article: My pray is that; May Allah grant you a relaxed mind, a peaceful soul, a joyful spirit, a healthy body and a heart full of Love.
Please never insult the alligator til after u've crossed the river and never give up til u're peak up.
With love! Be Jovial!! Be Patriotic!!!!
Yours sincerely

Terrorism at Fort Hood
Unfortunately all the nice words and good intentions cannot cover up the hatred that some Muslims have towards non-Muslims.
