In celebration of the 100th anniversary of blues music, and in recognition of the blues' ongoing impact on music and cultural
history, both in America and around the world, on September 5, 2002, the United States Congress proclaimed 2003 as the "Year of the Blues." The
year will be celebrated by bringing together blues events, multimedia projects (radio and film series), concerts, festivals, and education
initiatives. Spearheaded by Robert Santelli, CEO and Director of Seattle-based Experience Music Project (EMP), and the Memphis-based Blues
Foundation, the Year of the Blues aims to raise awareness of the blues, its unique American stories, and its influence in America and around
the world. The Year of the Blues is sponsored by Volkswagen. http://www.yearoftheblues.org/

Founded in 2002, The Blues Music Foundation (BMF) is a non-profit, international organization dedicated to the preservation of blues history,
the celebration of blues excellence, support of music education (particularly the blues), and the provision of financial assistance to needy
and worthy individuals who have made contributions to the blues. Based in Seattle, BMF was inspired by filmmaker Martin Scorsese's desire to
give back to the blues community and help raise awareness of the blues and its contribution to American culture and music worldwide. BMF
intends to support various blues organizations, blues societies, schools, and individuals involved in blues education and preservation of the
blues.
