Born and raised near Boston, where the revolution began, John Adams traveled to Philadelphia as a delegate to the Continental Congress. There he debated and helped shape the course of the revolution, and then, the structure of the new American government. Later, at the turn of the 19th century, Adams became the first president to live in the new federal city of Washington, in the District of Columbia.
