The Allied powers and the Soviets reshaped the make up of Europe at the close of World War II. Germany was divided into four zones: American, British, French and Soviet, per the agreements of the Yalta Conference. Berlin was similarly divided into four distinct areas but was situated some 100 miles within Soviet controlled eastern Germany, connected only by one highway and rail line to the west.
