Q: Do you see that the break with the Yalta spirit comes at the point where
Roosevelt dies? Or does it come with the arrival of the atomic bomb?
JLG: I think the Yalta agreements were breaking down even before Roosevelt died.
Roosevelt himself was very concerned, we know, about the implementation of the
agreement on Poland. That's a gradual process. And surely by the time that
the bomb is tested in July, the Yalta agreements for the most part have, if not
broken down, certainly become strained. So there's a high level of tension in
the relationship before the bomb is tested and used.
