Telegraph staff in the San Francisco office of the Army's Signal Corps pose in 1906, the year of the great earthquake. Heroes in the disaster, the Signal Corpsmen quickly strung emergency cables across the shattered city even as fires raged, and kept open lines of communication around the city and all the way to Washington, D.C.
