The American Experience
John Wesey Powells first expedition down the Colorado RIver
In May 1869, accompanied by nine men, the scientific explorer John Wesley Powell left Green River City on the first expedition by boat through the Grand Canyon. These maps, with their accompanying journal entries, detail the course of the grueling journey that ultimately claimed three lives. Two years after completing the trip, Powell returned to the Colorado River to collect more scientific data. This time he brought photographers with him who took the first black and white stills ever of the area. Their images, which helped to demystify the West for a generation of Americans, illustrate the following web pages.
