November 4, 1979 - Day 1
In the first days of the embassy siege, anti-American feeling ran high. The huge crowds which assembled outside the locked gates, supported militant students' demand to extradite the Shah who was under cancer treatment at a New York hospital. The U.S. government said extradiction was out of the question.

Three days after they broke into the embassy offices, students claimed they'd found proof the complex was a 'nest of spies' and they threatened, "If the Shah is not returned, the hostages would be tried for espionage."
