Governor John Peter Altgeld

John Peter Altgeld, a Democrat born in Germany, was elected as Governor of Illinois in 1892. Altgeld pardoned the remaining imprisoned Haymarket defendants in 1893, stating, "the State has never discovered who it was that threw the bomb that killed the policeman." His act made Altgeld the most hated man in America, and he served only one term as governor.
