Zhang Ham Zhi, Interpreter, Chinese Foreign Ministry, on: her return to Beijing
 |
After General Haig left we returned to Beijing. We got instruction from Premier Chou that we were not allowed to stay in Shanghai, we should go back to Beijing immediately after General Haig left. We should all go back to the foreign office to wait. Premier Chou En-lai was going to meet us. So we all felt guilty like we had made a big mistake. So we all went to the foreign office and sat gloomily in the meeting room waiting for instruction. Chou En-lai really criticized us very, very seriously. And he said, what happened in Shanghai and Hangzhou almost upset the whole strategy of Mao Tse-tung's plan of breaking the ice between the U.S. and China.
