On Thursday, February 17, 1972, after attending a departure ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, the president and Mrs. Nixon boarded the Spirit of '76 at Andrews Air Force Base, and thus set off on their trip to the People's Republic of China. Several days later, after flying to and spending time in Hawaii and then Guam, the president's plane landed in Shanghai, China.
The president and Mrs. Nixon toured China for the following seven days.
