1936 Louis vs. Schmeling fight

Audio Transcript

Clem McCarthy:
They're twisting in their corners... there's the bell. And they step out, both men cautiously, and they're sparring around in the center of the ring there. Neither man... Louis lashed out with a left hand, but very light, just lashed out with a left. And Max Schmeling sent over a hard right but it was short. Once more they're sparring in the center of the ring. Schmeling backed up a few feet on him there, Louis is in the center, both men cautious, neither one has shot but one or two blows a piece so far and they have gone about 15 seconds. Still there and Louis led with a left but just very light, and Max Schmeling tried with a left also, no damage done, a brief clinch and Donovan took them apart and they're once more in the center of the ring, and there they spar. Schmeling is feinting at Louis and Louis feinting back at him. Neither man has shot a blow. There was a light exchange of lefts, both feinting and bluffing. Neither man has shot a real blow. Once more in the center of the ring Louis in the very center, Schmeling backing and Schmeling led with a fast left that landed high on Louis' cheek but he missed with a right. And Louis also got over a light right hand to Max's head. Now once more, there's Schmeling, he is backing away towards the rope. Louis came through with a right hand to the body but it was short. And then Schmeling came out with a left. Louis tried a right upper cut but it missed. Schmeling backed away. Louis is carefully following him, but Schmeling... Louis let go with a left hand. It landed flush on the jaw and he followed with a right to the cheek and Schmeling backed away. Now Louis is in the center of the ring and Schmeling is once more sparring, and backing steadily away and Louis strikes out with a hard left to the face. It landed. They went into a clinch and Schmeling is trying some hard rights and lefts in close to the body. Now they're back in the center of the ring once more. Louis lashed out with a light left there. And another light left. Schmeling tried with a left but neither one did any damage. Now Louis, in the center of the ring. And Schmeling led with a hard left to the face but Louis rode the blow and came in with a left of his own. Then Louis hooked a hard left to the body and missed with a right. He has colored Schmeling's eyes just a trifle. And once more, Louis lashed out with a left hand that caught Schmeling but not hard. Schmeling tried with a left and he came in close in a clinch. They are both trying with four light uppercuts but no damage done. And quickly broke at the command of Donovan. Louis stands in the center of the ring. Schmeling is over near my neutral corner here. Schmeling tried with a left and then he came through with a hard right to the body, but Louis tied him up and they're in the center of the ring once more. Now Schmeling in the center of the ring, Louis over towards his own corner. Louis lashed out with one of those fast lefts just like it had the speed of a Buick there but it hasn't yet produced the power. And once more Schmeling in the center of the ring. Louis lashed out with a left hand but was short. Schmeling... and Schmeling tried with a left and Schmeling tried with a right but was short. Louis was backed out of the way from it, no ducking. He didn't duck, just stepped back and was about an inch away from the punch. Louis tried with a left hand, but it was short and Schmeling came in under and tried with a left there, two lefts, but they blocked each other at arm's length. Once more Louis in the center of the ring, Schmeling over close to the ropes, and they're sparring and weaving, both gently. Now Louis with a left, fading. No neither man will lead, Louis tried and then at close quarters he came in with a hard right to Schmeling's... the back of Schmeling's head, was right behind his ears. And there! At the bell, Louis got up a hard right uppercut to Schmeling's jaw.
